Excercise Without Straining

I haven't been exercising in a long time all because I feel most of the exercise I do are straining my joints or maybe because I am doing them improperly. Whatever it is I wish there is a way that I won't feel the stress on my knees and joints. I've been researching about elliptical machines and I found some of the best rated elliptical machine available. Maybe I should try to get one of the simplest machine and then decide if I should get that cross trainer one.
